Meet the Student: How a Tailored Recruitment Program Helped One IT GraduateMarch 2008 Print Despite a skills shortage in the IT industry, students still find it difficult to land a job with no experience. DDLS’ SpecIT program provides recruits with specialist training, a guaranteed job upon successful completion and fast-tracked career progression with some of Australia’s leading organisations such as building materials supplier, Boral. Name: Kumeshan Naidoo 1. Why did you engage with DDLS’ SpecIT program? I had just completed my Diploma of Systems Administration at TAFE and had real difficulties getting my first job. Companies needed experienced applicants and I just didn’t have this experience yet. I heard about the SpecIT program through a friend and attended a seminar to learn more about it. DDLS offered a guaranteed job with some of Australia’s leading organisations and with some additional training, it seemed like a good way to go. 2. What did you like about the training offered by DDLS? Class sizes were small which meant there was a lot of access to computers and other resources. It also meant lots of one on one time with the trainers, which gave me the support I needed to pass the courses. The trainers I had were really friendly and we got to practice what I was learning all the way through. 3. What training did DDLS provide you with and for how long were the courses? My eight-week training schedule included becoming qualified as a Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician. I also achieved CompTIA A+ Certification and received training in Communication and Customer Skills for IT Professionals to prepare for my work at a service and support desk. The DDLS training gave me the technical and communication skills I needed to handle difficult customers and respond to technical inquiries. It was a lot easier to get up and running in the job after having such specific training. 4. What role did DDLS find for you? I work for Boral, one of Australia’s leading building materials suppliers in a technical support role. This means I assist customers when they have software and hardware problems. 5. How long do you expect to stay in your role/position for? I have been in this position for four months and it has given me some really good experience dealing with customers. I plan to stay on with the company for as long as possible. I see myself in this role for at least another 12 months and would then like to progress my career with another role in the organisation. The training I received will give me the fast career progression I need to do this. 6. Why should other graduates consider SpecIT as either an alternative to tertiary education, or an add-on to their training? The best thing about the training was the guaranteed job I received at the end. It also meant I was able to work within a large company and get the experience and career opportunities that come with that. There were also two other SpecIT graduates employed by my company so it was nice to know they had a similar background to me.
