Overview:The purpose of this 5-day course is to present students with strategies and techniques for customizing team sites and publishing sites in a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 environment. The class will teach professionals how to transform out-of-the-box SharePoint sites by applying corporate layouts, logos, colors, and graphics. In the process students will learn best practices in user-interface design and the use of graphic elements as well as how to incorporate workflow and business intelligence components into sites.

Key Topics:1. Introduction
This chapter introduces SharePoint Technologies and explores the differences between Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. The chapter compares the two products and identifies the underlying server architecture components such as IIS and ASP.NET

2. The User Perspective
This chapter gives designers an overview of SharePoint including navigating the user interface, using web parts, personalizing SharePoint pages, understanding Document Libraries and Lists, and custom views.

3. SharePoint Web Applications and Sites
This chapter explains the structure of Web Applications in the SharePoint environment and introduces techniques for application management including Alternate Access Mappings and SharePoint Zones. The chapter also explores SharePoint Site Collection and Site management along with site collection and site galleries.

4. Out-of-the box Customizations
This chapter teaches students how to customize SharePoint sites using the built-in user interface to change the default image on a home page, modify the site navigation, select site colors and themes, and assign a master page.

5. Introduction to SharePoint Designer
In this chapter we tour the SharePoint Designer 2007 environment showing students how to connect to a SharePoint site, use the Design and Code views, explore the file structure, and generate performance reports.

6. Types of SharePoint Sites
This chapter compares the different types of SharePoint sites and explains their purpose and benefits. These types include the Team Site, Meeting Workspace, and Collaboration Publishing site, Wiki site, and Blog site.

7. Creating and Editing Team Sites and Team Site Pages
In this chapter students will create a Team Site in SharePoint Designer, open pages for editing in SharePoint Designer, add Web Part Zones and web parts, apply a Master Page, add a left-hand menu to a web part page.

8. Web Content Management
This chapter explains the new Web Content Management features of MOSS such as configuring Page Libraries, working with Page Layouts, creating reusable content, and scheduling content publishing.

9. Content Types
This chapter introduces the concept of Content Types for managing metadata in SharePoint sites. The chapter will cover creating Site Columns and using them in Content Types as well as assigning document templates and information management policies to Content Types.

10. Creating and Editing Layout Pages
In this chapter we explain how to create Layout Pages for generating SharePoint publishing site pages with customized content. The chapter covers overriding delegate controls and the use of field controls to position content on the page.

11. Creating and Editing Master Pages
This chapter examines how to create and apply custom Master Pages for defining the overall look and feel of SharePoint sites. The chapter discusses the relationship between master pages and content pages and the use of Content Placeholder controls to specify the information available on the page.

12. Creating Data Form Web Parts
This chapter explains how to create custom Data Connections to databases and XML web services and how to bind them to pages through Data Form Web Parts.

13. Customizing Data Form Web Parts
This chapter builds on Chapter 12 by explaining how to customize Data Form web parts by applying conditional formatting, filtering data, sorting and grouping data, and setting pagination on the web part.

14. Creating Custom Workflows
This chapter provides an introduction to workflows in MOSS and explains how to work with out-of-the-box workflows as well as how to create custom workflows using SharePoint Designer.

15. Creating and Deploying Custom Features
This chapter explains the purpose of SharePoint Features for deploying customizations in a SharePoint environment. The chapter describes the different XML files that are required for a feature and how to deploy and activate them.

16. The Administrative Features of SPD
This chapter gives an understanding of how to control access to SharePoint sites through SharePoint Designer Contributor Mode. How to configure site templates, and how to generate reports from SharePoint Designer.
Target Audience:The class is geared towards advanced web masters who have experience editing and maintaining traditional web sites using HTML, CSS, Javascript, and graphics files. The class is also suitable for administrators or developers who want to gain a better understanding of the code-less design and customization process.
Prerequisites:Students attending this class should be familiar with web standards used in conventional web sites and have had some experience with web editing tools such as Microsoft FrontPage. No software development experience is necessary. Experience with viewing and collaborating in a SharePoint site is recommended but not required.
