The Cisco Story

Cisco was the child of husband and wife team, Len Bosack and Sandy Lerner, two Stanford University employees who wanted to email each other from different buildings.

At the time the technology was lacking so they saw the opportunity to develop a solution for their own needs. Multi-protocol routing was born and Cisco Systems became the first company to build and sell routers on a commercial scale and in doing so helped to shape the future of IT and networking.

In 1990, when Cisco listed on the NASDAQ Stock Exchange, they had a market capitalisation of $224 million. As the needs of their customers changed, so did Cisco, who have always devised solutions to meet specific customer challenges. From the initial product offering of multi-protocol routers they soon expanded into switching technologies, and soon became the market leader in that field.

This is story that Cisco has repeated in almost every market they have entered. IP Telephony, Security, Video Conferencing, Cisco has become the market leader and the standard by which all others are compared. They continue to invest over $ 5billion each year in R&D and also spend heavily to acquire new technology and talent to remain at the leading edge of technology trends.

Cisco’s CEO for the past 15 years, John Chambers, credits Cisco’s success on catching market transitions as “the network continues to evolve from the plumbing of the Internet—providing connectivity—to the platform that will change the way we work, live, play and learn”. This has helped Cisco to become one of the world’s largest companies with a market capitalisation of $130 billion.
