ITIL 4 Certification Path

DDLS offers a large range of ITIL® training courses and certification exams, from foundation to expert level.

ITIL® 4 has been designed to help organisations meet the increasing demand from the current complex digital environment. The new scheme has been designed to be backwards compatible with ITIL v3 and streamlined to encourage conversion beyond ITIL Foundation level.

Overview

The benefits of a candidate moving to ITIL 4 are:

  • Demonstrates that a candidate has the knowledge to navigate the modern digital landscape

  • Shows that a candidate’s certification/skills are up-to-date

All students commence their ITIL certification journey with the ITIL 4 Foundation certification.

  • Students who are new to ITIL will take ITIL 4 Foundation course.

    • three-day course

    • no pre-requisites

  • Students with existing ITIL v3 Foundation certification can continue the journey with the shorter Upgrade to ITIL 4 Foundation course.

    • two-day course

    • students MUST have passed the ITIL v3 Foundation before attending this course

New ITIL 4 Certification Designations

After passing ITIL 4 Foundation, two separate designations may be pursued.

To obtain the ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) designation or ITIL Strategic Leader (ITIL SL) designation, the candidate must complete all modules in the relevant stream, with Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) being a universal module for both streams. If both are successfully attained, the candidate will be eligible for assessment to become an ITIL Master.

The ITIL 4 Certification Scheme comprises the following modules:

There is only one bridge offered for ITIL v3 certified candidates. This is only for existing ITIL Expert or anyone with at least 17 credits in the existing ITIL v3 certification scheme. The Transition Module leads to the ITIL Managing Professional designation.
Important note: the Managing Professional (MP) Transition course and the associated exam will be discontinued by PeopleCert on 1 July 2022. If you wish to take this path you must take the exam PRIOR to 1 July 2022.

Release Timeframes

  • ITIL 4 Foundation – 28th February 2019

  • ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) Transition Module – 3 October 2019; retiring 1 July 2022

  • ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP) – CDS and DPI released 8 November 2019; DSV and HVIT released 28 February 2020

  • ITIL Strategic Leader (ITIL SL) – launched 25 September 2020

  • ITIL Master – not yet announced

Specific Certification Scenarios

Here are some common scenarios. Select the one that most suits you to see what is recommended.

Scenario 1 – Jose

Current situation: New to ITIL (no current ITIL certification).
Recommendation: Do three-day ITIL 4 Foundation.

Scenario 2 – Harriet

Current situation: Currently ITIL v3 Foundation certified.
Recommendation: Do two-day Upgrade to ITIL 4 Foundation.

Scenario 3 – Luis

Current situation: Certified at ITIL v3 Intermediate level, but with less than 17 credits.
Recommendation: Continue working towards at least 17 credits and take the Managing Professional (MP) Transition course and exam when available in late 2019.

Scenario 4 – Clare

Current situation: Has been working on her ITIL Expert Certification and has more than 17 credits.
Recommendation: Take the Managing Professional (MP) Transition course and exam when available in late 2019.

Scenario 5 – Rose

Current situation: Certified and an experienced ITIL Expert.
Recommendation: Take the Managing Professional (MP) Transition course and exam when available in late 2019.

Scenario 6 – Peter

Current situation: Currently not ITIL certified but works in IT Operations at a bank. He is DevOps Foundation certified.
Recommendation:

  • Short way:
    Do ITIL v3 Foundation as soon as possible to supplement his DevOps knowledge. This will give him valuable operational knowledge in the digital environment he has at the bank. If he wants to keep his ITIL certification updated, then he can do Upgrade to ITIL 4 Foundation later.

OR

  • Longer way:
    Do ITIL 4 Foundation followed by the practices that are relevant to his job, i.e. Incident Management. (Note: at this stage we do not have details about the publication on these practices.) At the moment ITIL v3 Foundation is the best-known option.

PeopleCert Exams

All PeopleCert exams are now conducted via online proctoring.

Candidates can schedule their exam for any time within the voucher validity period of 12 months, to be taken anywhere, on any Windows or Mac computer. Live proctors will guide and invigilate the exam process.
