Why is cyber security training important?

As issues in website security vulnerabilities in healthcare, transportation, online wallets, supply chains, and geopolitics abound, it's apparent that security is everyone's responsibility - from information security professionals and policy makers to individuals and end users. The last few years has seen a huge disruption and shift in the way we go about our lives both professionally and personally.

Make your people your first line of defence

In an April 2022 advisory, the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) sent out an updated advisory urging organisations to prioritise mitigating against threats posed by a range of malicious cyber actors. These actions include:

    • Patching applications and devices, particularly internet-facing services

    • Implementing mitigations against phishing and spear phishing attacks

    • Ensuring that logging and detection systems are fully updated and functioning

    • Reviewing incident response and business continuity plans.

Organisational and community resilience against growing cyber-attacks really is a team sport – all employees have a critical role they need to play. The great majority of successful cyber-attacks succeed because of simple errors any of us can make. We need to study cyber security now. The reality is that we all require new cyber-awareness skills and behaviours for the digital age to better understand what appropriate and safe behaviours look like.

We’ve collaborated with the best in the business to provide cyber security awareness and resilience training for your staff in Australia.

What are good cyber security courses?

Questions that we frequently get asked on this vary from "What courses are required for cyber security?" to "What is the best cyber security training?", and our response is always that it depends on your journey and your goals.

We have classes for specialists in so many areas like Cloud, Incident Response, Auditing, Governance – there’s a class for almost anyone in their security journey.

If your goal is to encourage a culture of vigilance in your organisation, we highly recommend cyber security training for employees in Australia which we see as important to hold regularly.

The first step in securing the data of your company, team and customers is strategising how to promote a strong security culture – a workplace, household or community that implements the right tools and policies for protection and trains its members in best practices. The next step is to facilitate regular cyber security training.

Successful cyber security starts at the top – from government policy makers, community leaders, and company executive teams. IT teams should also be given avenues to share their stories and insights.

And if you're on the path to becoming a cyber security specialist, we have students attend multiple classes because they want a solid foundation. So, they do both CEH and Security+.

We have students who want a solid understanding of how to integrate security across an organisation so they sit both CISSP and CISM.

For those who want to apply security measures to the current systems they manage, you can find software vendor-specific courses like Microsoft cyber security training, Cisco courses on cyber security, and security courses by AWS and VMware.

How long is cyber security training?

Our instructor-led and virtual instructor-led cyber security training courses last from one day to five days. Many cyber security courses run for five days to provide an in-depth and hands-on experience, with a mix of theory, demos, and labs. Training days normally run for a standard work day (9 am to 5 pm), with lunch and refreshment breaks.

We also offer self-paced courses that you can work through at your own pace. Generally they must be completed within 6 or 12 months from date of purchase and are often used by those who cannot take several days out of their work schedule to attend training.

Learning cyber security is a continuous process. Most students sit one class and get an amazing amount out of the days spent with their trainer. They end up asking what next steps they can take to either expand or deepen their knowledge.

Are cyber security training courses hard?

What are the difficulty levels and prerequisites? What makes it worthwhile?

Cyber security awareness training for staff like the CyberSAFE Online Learning course is geared toward end-users. To ensure success in this course, students should have experience with the basic use of conventional end-user technology, including desktop, laptop, or tablet computers; mobile phones; and basic internet functions such as web browsing and email.

Intermediate and advanced cyber security skills training often requires a number of years of work experience in information technology, along with fundamental credentials.

While cyber security courses can seem daunting - especially advanced courses - the learning is made enjoyable and worth your time and effort if you're passionate about technology and are supported by a community of technical instructors and fellow students.

One of our students who works as an IT security specialist in the government sector notes how our cyber security course has given him an appreciation for how people in the private sector and other government agencies handle various situations. This includes governance and playbooks for security incidents. They were able to share knowledge and experiences on tools and dealing with various third-party suppliers. And his network of colleagues is a little wider now due to the training.
